Paul Cataford
Chief Executive Officer

Paul Cataford joined Loop Energy as interim Chief Financial Officer and Corporate Secretary in December 2022. Paul brings a wealth of experience in venture capital, private equity, and managing public and private high-growth technology companies. At Loop Energy, he is responsible for overseeing the company’s financial compliance, growth strategy, investor relations and corporate governance.

Prior to joining Loop Energy, Paul served as Interim CEO for Titan Medical Inc., where he remains as the Board Chair and is also the current Executive Director at not-for-profit, Business Link. His past experience also includes several positions as board chair, audit committee chair and governance chair on a number of company boards listed on the TSX, TSXV & NASDAQ.

Paul holds an MBA (Finance) from the Schulich School of Business and a B.Sc. (Mech Engineering) at Queens University in Kingston. He has also received his ICD.D designation.

Daryl
Dr. Daryl D. Musselman, PEng
Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer

Dr. Daryl Musselman joined Loop Energy in 2020, bringing over 30 years of experience in the renewable energy and automotive sectors. Daryl oversees and directs product development and manufacturing, ensuring quality standards and production timelines are met. Throughout his time, Daryl has been integral to the expansion of Loop Energy’s Burnaby operations, growth of its Global Technical Services operations and the build up of its manufacturing operations in Shanghai, China. He works across engineering, technology development, manufacturing, vehicle integration and fleet maintenance teams to enhance the value of Loop Energy’s product offerings, including launching its next-generation fuel cell, the S1200. 

Daryl has significant past executive management experience in the growth and operations of cleantech companies, including Vice President roles at Svante and Endurance Wind Power.

A registered Professional Engineer, Daryl has a Bachelor of Applied Science degree and a Master of Applied Science degree from the University of Waterloo, a Ph.D. in Engineering Science from Western University, and has completed two Executive Development programs from McGill University.

George Rubin
Chief Commercial Officer

George Rubin joined Loop Energy in 2020 as Managing Director, Commercial Strategy, and was promoted to Chief Commercial Officer soon after. As a seasoned technology executive, George oversees Loop Energy’s business development, sales and marketing activities. He identifies strategic opportunities to advance hydrogen fuel cell electrification and matches fuel cell solutions with customers’ desired applications.

Along with helping Loop Energy enter various new markets, including Australia, Colombia and South Korea, George Rubin has been fundamental to progressing customers through Loop Energy’s Customer Adoption Cycle. He played an important role in securing Loop Energy’s largest fuel cell supply agreement with the electric truck manufacturer, Tevva Motors in 2022.

George’s Rubin’s previous experience includes growing clean technology companies, including Day4Energy, where he grew the company to 265 employees and sales in excess of $350 million in seven years.

George holds a Masters in Quantum Radio Physics from Moscow State University along with a Bachelor of Accounting and Diploma in Financial Management from BCIT, and a CFA.

Sean
Dr. Sean MacKinnon
Chief Scientist

As Chief Scientist at Loop Energy, Dr. Sean MacKinnon is responsible for leading and guiding the evolution of the company’s suite of fuel cell technology solutions. His research has been integral to ensuring Loop Energy’s technology provides OEMs and fleet operators with a high-performing and economical alternative to diesel engines.

Sean joined Loop Energy in 2012 after conducting two peer reviews of the company’s eFlowTM fuel cell technology and validating its capacity to address technical barriers encountered earlier in his career with Ballard Power Systems and General Motors Fuel Cell R&D.

He played a pivotal role in developing and patenting the next generation of Loop Energy’s proprietary technology and has over 50 granted, continued and pending patents of his own.  

Sean also worked with the National Research Council of Canada, where he helped construct a national program for alternative vehicle propulsion technologies. He received his Doctorate in Chemistry from Carleton University.

Kent Thexton
Chair of the Board

As Director and Board Chair at Loop Energy, Kent provides valuable oversight to the management team and brings extensive experience navigating public markets. Kent spent three years as the CEO and President of Sierra Wireless, a global leader in wireless communications solutions. Prior to his tenure as CEO, Kent served Sierra Wireless as a Director and Chair of the Board for a total of 13 years.

In addition to Sierra Wireless, Kent has contributed to the boards of several public companies, including Redknee Solutions, now known as Optiva, a Canadian provider of telecommunication operations software and services, and O2 PLC, a British telecommunications company. Kent also has extensive experience leading Canadian capital venture companies, including as the Managing Director at OMERs Ventures and the founder of ScaleUP Venture Partners.

Ben Nyland

Director

As President & CEO of Loop Energy, Ben Nyland strategically guides the company’s vision to design and manufacture fuel cell solutions for the commercial vehicle industry. Ben was appointed President of Loop Energy in 2015 and Chief Executive Officer in 2016. Under his leadership, Loop Energy has grown its operations internationally, with facilities in China and Europe to serve its growing customer base in Asia and Europe. During his tenure, Ben has overseen the launch of multiple industry leading products while expanding Loop Energy’s team to China, the US and Europe. 

He led the company in securing two rounds of strategic investment and subsequently through the IPO process in 2021, raising $100 million on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Prior to joining Loop Energy, Ben spent over 10 years in a variety of senior management positions, including as President of Rampworth Capital Services, Exro Technologies and Maclean Group Marketing.

Ben holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from the University of Alberta.

Dr. Andreas Truckenbrodt

Andreas joined Loop Energy in 2014 and spent eight years as the Board Chair. As a Director, he draws on his 30+ year career in the automotive industry. Previously he was CEO of the AFCC – a joint venture of Daimler AG and Ford Motor Company – where he was responsible for driving the development and commercialization of the automaker’s fuel cell vehicle program. Prior to AFCC, Andreas led the Hybrid Development Center for Daimler Chrysler, as well as senior management and engineering roles with Ballard Power Systems, Daewoo and BMW. He was also previously the President & CEO of the Canadian Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Association.

He holds a degree in Aeronautics and Aerospace Engineering from the Technical University of Munich, Germany, and received his PhD in Mechanics and Control Systems from the Technical University of Munich, Germany in 1980. Andreas is also a consultant for TCEC, providing strategic and technical advice to companies with respect to their clean energy transport programs.

Sophia Langlois

Sophia Langlois joined Loop’s Board of Directors in 2021. She is also a member of the board for Alaris Equity Partners (TSX AD.UN) and Telus Spark Science Centre.

Previously, Sophia was an audit partner with KPMG LLP from 2006 to 2020, where she supported domestic and international companies. She is a Member of the Institute of Corporate Directors, the Chartered Professional Accountants of Alberta and the Human Resources Institute of Alberta. 

She received her Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Calgary.

Brad Miller

Brad Miller joined Loop Energy’s Board of Directors in 2023 and brings considerable expertise in leading organizations with manufacturing operations. Loop Energy draws on his experience of successfully leading and scaling various companies with manufacturing operations in Canada and the US.

In addition to his role at Loop Energy, Brad is the Owner & President of AdvanTec Global Innovations, an industrial manufacturer that services the marine, heavy industry and cleantech sectors. Under his leadership, the company expanded into developing natural gas reformers for stationary hydrogen generation and fueling station equipment. Prior to founding AdvanTec, he purchased IMW Industries, which he built into a globally successful manufacturer of CNG equipment with subsidiaries in five countries and over $100 million in revenue and 700 employees. In 2009, he successfully negotiated the sale of the company to Clean Energy Fuels for $125 million.

Brad is an active investor in several technology start-ups in the pyrolysis, hydrogen production, food processing and medical device sectors, and volunteers his time as a board member for several foundations, not-for-profits and NGOs focused on education and health in Canada and Uganda.

Brad graduated from BCIT with an honours diploma in Mechanical Technology.

Chris Clulow sq clr
Chris Clulow

Chris Clulow joined the Loop Energy board of directors in 2021.

He has been the Corporate Controller of Cummins Inc. since March 1, 2017.  As Controller, he is responsible for Cummins’ global accounting processes, financial reporting, accounting policy, Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, finance transformation and finance systems.  He joined Cummins in May 2004, initially in the Sarbanes Oxley compliance group. He progressed through several leadership roles in finance and strategy from 2005 to 2014 across three of the four Cummins operating segments.

Prior to joining Cummins, he worked in public accounting for eight years with Ernst & Young, in the US and UK, and the two years prior to that with Coopers & Lybrand.  During his time in public accounting, he held roles in audit, mergers and acquisitions and US GAAP technical advisory services.

He graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accountancy and Finance. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a graduate of Cummins’ Executive Leadership Development Program.
